Tips for Better Candle Burning: How to Maximize Your Candle’s Lifespan and Scent

Candles are a beautiful way to add warmth and ambiance to any space. However, to ensure you get the most out of your candle, it’s important to follow a few simple guidelines. Proper candle care can maximize burn time, ensure an even melt, and enhance the fragrance. Here are our top tips for burning your candles the right way.

💡 Did you know

The earliest candles were made from animal fat by ancient Egyptians around 3000 BC, but did you know that in the 18th century, candles made from whale oil were considered a luxury? Thankfully, today's candles are crafted from eco-friendly waxes like soy and beeswax, giving you a cleaner burn and a guilt-free glow!

1. Let the Wax Pool
When you first light your candle, allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the container. This helps prevent “tunneling,” where the wax burns down the middle, leaving a thick ring of unused wax on the sides. A full wax pool also improves the scent throw, giving you the most out of your fragrance.

2. Trim the Wick

Always trim the candle wick to ¼ inch before each burn. Long or uneven wicks can cause excess soot, uneven burning, or even flaring. A properly trimmed wick ensures a clean and steady flame, giving your candle an even burn every time.

3. Mind the Burn Time

Avoid burning for longer than 4 hours at a time. After this period, the candle can become too hot, which may affect how it burns. Let it cool for at least 2 hours before relighting. This cooling period helps maintain the integrity of the wax and wick for future burns.

4. Keep It Clean

Ensure that your wax pool is always free of debris. Wick trimmings, matches, and any other flammable materials can disrupt the flame, leading to uneven burning and reduced longevity.

5. Store Properly

Candles are sensitive to heat and light, so it’s best to store them in a cool, dry, and dark place. Keeping candles out of direct sunlight prevents them from discoloring or warping, and helps maintain the quality of the wax and fragrance.

6. Avoid Drafts

Burn your candle away from vents, fans, open windows, or any other source of drafts. Airflow can cause the flame to flicker excessively, leading to uneven burning, soot production, and a shorter burn time.

7. Candle Placement

Always place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface. This protects your furniture from heat damage and minimizes the risk of accidents. For candles in glass containers, this is especially important, as heat can sometimes cause the glass to crack if placed on an unstable or non-heat-resistant surface.
